Not many Norman buildings remain today because they were destroyed in the French raid of 1457, but the street plan of Sandwich town centre was much the same as it is today.

The Norman Conquest - Sandwich became one of the manors of William I's half brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux. It was known for a time as Odo's Island.
The Normans reclaimed the marshes to the West of the town and created the parishes of St. Mary's and St. Clements.
The Domesday Book - Sandwich was, again, in the possession of the monks of Christchurch Canterbury. The Domesday Book contains a passage showing the original Confederation of the Cinque Ports as established in Edward the Confessor's reign. It also states that Sandwich was both in size and importance, ranked 4th after London, Norwich, and Ipswich.
