Sandwich Kent England UK: History Timeline: 1100 to 1399

This is the time when a great storm caused sandbanks to form at the mouth of the River Stour - narrowing the entrance to Sandwich Haven. Over the following centuries the river continued to silt up until it became the narrow river it is today.

Sandwich Kent: 1100 to 1399

1170	Thomas Becket returned to England after his exile and landed at Sandwich, on his way to Canterbury.
1194	Richard Coeur de Lion landed en route for Canterbury, to give thanks to God for his deliverance after his imprisonment in Austria.
1216 1217	The French landed and attacked the town. The French again attacked in 1217, but were defeated. In celebration, it is thought that St. Bartholomew's Hospital was built.
1226	Helas de Kingston elected as the First Mayor of Sandwich.
1227	Henry III granted a Market to Sandwich
1247	February - The Great Storm - It brought sand banks to narrow the eastward entrance to Sandwich Haven.
1265	Sandwich was ordered to send 'four learned and discreet men' to Simon de Montfort's first parliament.
1290	Edward I took over Sandwich from Christchurch.
1335	Peter Barde, Bailiff of Sandwich, was appointed Admiral of the Fleet.
1342	Edward III embarked at Sandwich for Brittany.
1357	It is stated in numerous publications and on many websites that in 1357 The Black Prince landed at Sandwich with the French King as prisoner. This it is probably incorrect! The story was probably invented in the 15th century by John Froissart and is in his Chronicles. The Dictionary of National Biography and Barber, the modern authority on the Black Prince, state that he actually landed at Plymouth!
1380	The Town Walls were built.
1392	St. Thomas's Hospital founded.
