An Old Murder:
As a result, he was able to lay off several of his labourers.
Capt. Gillow's son, Arthur, had been left on guard, and possibly because he had been recognised, Gambrill murdered him. There was no possible defence, and Gambrill was hanged in Maidstone Gaol shortly afterwards. An elaborate tomb, paid for by public subscription, was erected in Woodnesborough churchyard, in memory of the murdered man. In 1878, a local farmer, Capt. William Gillow, bought this steam engine to speed up the threshing and similar jobs on his farm at Woodnesborough (a village next to Sandwich). 
One of them, Stephen Gambrill, after visiting a number of public houses in Sandwich one night, decided to break up the machine which had deprived him of his livelihood.
