In answer to Paul - See:
www.open-sandwich.co.uk/history/timeline/saxons.htm
The 'wich' in Sandwich was and is all the meanings below but most likely derives from the Saxon.
Saxon/Old English wic or wich - trading place
Scandinavian - wyk - creek, bay
Latin vicus - dwelling, farm

I think you will find that sandwich is not only a saxon word but an amalgam of norse and saxon

Have just found this excellent way of keeping up to date with whats happening in the old town. Can't remember when I last spent so long "strolling down memory lane". So many of the memories triggered off my own particular set of recollections. Talking of Mr Sage, Mr Chesterfield, Mrs Stringer, and Mr Ford at the Primary School - do you also remember Mrs Roome, Miss Wells and (one to test the real long distance wayback) when I started infants school in 1949 - do you remember Miss Govia who always played "Country Gardens" on the piano when we 'paraded' back in from playtime?
And who can forget Mr Ford's collections of milk-bottle tops, or his ability to beat the average 8 year old playing draughts!! Thanks Bernie Moore for your 'friends' list : a few more names to add - Godfrey Laslett from Woodnesboro; Norman Hunt; Graham Rogers; David Knowleton, Ted Castle (who went to work for 'Ginger Summers' in the butchers shop - Strand St then top of King St). So many memories - more to follow another day. Best wishes to all Old Sandwichians wherever you are. Kind Regards to All. Ian

Thoroughly enjoyed the site, brings back many memories. Strange I find no mention of the RAF base which played an important part in Sandwich history??

While watching the BBC telecast of the Open I have become so impressed by the knowledge and respect of the local fans. Your genuine concern and treatment towards this event is remarkable. Thank you for showing the world how to do it!
