I was lying in bed listening to the BBC World Service last night, when on the news (1300 GMT) there was an interview with Mayor Trussler. It appears he is of the opinion the best person for the position of "Warden of the Cinque Ports" is either an African (Mandella) or a Yank (Clinton). Surely that is not the opinion of the residents of the area. Is it? I would hazard a guess and say there are many Britons worthy of this title and indeed locals who would represent the Ports admirably. What do other locals and expats think?

To all those Sandwicheons who remember me or not, be they resident or overseas, have a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy Prosperous New Year. I have many pleasurable memories of the “Ye olde home towne” both old and more recent, but to those of you still resident my admiration, personally I could not take another English Winter, so from this colonial, in the deep sunny South, Seasons Greetings. Hello everyone around the world who - like me - are away from Sandwich now. VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL, AND EVERY GOOD WISH AND GOOD HEALTH AND LUCK FOR 2004. Keep the memories rolling, so that wherever we may be - there is a constant flow of memories about that wonderful little Cinque Port in East Kent. Happy Christmas all Ian
